About the Parang La Trek:
Parang La trek takes you through the verdant beauty of Spiti Valley. Here is a nine-day long adventure expedition to Parang La from Kaza, the beautiful starting point which is really suitable for a perfect commencement of such an expedition. In the first lap of the trek, Kibber at an altitude of 14000 feet and centuries old Ki monastery will be the ideal place to explore and after crossing many narrow river gorges you will reach Dumla. The quite tough and demanding phase of the trek comes when you move from Thaltak Meadow to Jagtha and from there to Bomgrojen.
The fourth day of the trek sees the main stretches of this exciting adventure when you prepare to climb the summit up. From the top, you may find the impressive beauty of Spiti Valley highly influential on your self. From the top, with the glimpses of the verdant valley, walk down to the famous Pare Chu River and from there, you will move enthusiastically toward Dak Karzong. As you continue the trek, you will come to conquer the flat paths reaching up to Racholamo Valley and from then onward, there will be easy downhill ways to reach Norbu Sumdo. You will get to cross a river beyond Norbu Sumdo to reach Chumik Shilde.

Arrive in Kaza, make yourself comfortable by exploring the town and get acclimatized. Kaza is the administrative centre of the Spiti Valley.
After getting used to the conditions, begin the experience by first driving from Kaza to the small village of Kibber.
Kibber is situated at a great height of about 14000 feet above sea level, and it is among the highest human settlements in the world.
Near the village is the famous Ki Monastery – a 11th century Buddhist site – famous for its architecture, wall paintings and images of Lord Buddha.
Later, commence the first phase of the Parang La trek and move towards Dumla.
It is a short hike but you need to be cautious due to the slightly rough terrain of the Lahaul and Spiti region.
Cross several deep and narrow river gorges on the way to Dumla, and on reaching your destination travel to the campsite for an overnight stay.
Walk down the mountainous slopes while completing this stretch of the Parang La trekking expedition and reach the base portion of a narrow gorge.
After completing the descent, conquer the climbs towards the meadow of Thaltak.
As you reach the altitude, pitch your tents and enjoy a peaceful camping.
In the morning, start off with the long and demanding phase of the trek to Parang La by walking for around 8 km towards Jagtha and then further towards Bongrojen.
On the way, come down the slopes towards the floor of a river and then follow it upstream.
En route Bongrojen, walk through hordes of small and big rocks, scattered on the track.
On arrival in Bongrojen, transfer to the campsite for a night stay.
One of the main stretches of Parang La will take you to the summit of the mountain pass itself.
Have a hot cup of tea and breakfast before you start the trek.
Gain elevation gradually while ascending to the top of the pass.
On reaching the pass summit, look at the bewitching views of the Spiti Valley, and then start descending towards the Pare Chu River.
Post the successful completion of the trails, tread on flat plains on the way to Dak Karzong.
It is a small, flat and barren valley surrounded by high mountains on all sides.
Upon reaching the site, travel to the camp and rest.
Head upstream along the Pare Chu River, and walk through numerous minor mountain rivers.
On reaching Datang Yongma, set up camps and retire for the day.
As you proceed with the Parang La trek, you would be hiking early morning along the easy and almost-flat path up to the Racholamo Valley.
From here, the track comes downhill considerably, passing by the grounds of Norbu Sumdo, which used to be the meeting place of Ladakhi monarchs.
Cross a river beyond Norbu Sumdo on the way to Chumik Shilde.
On reaching the destination, travel to the camps for an overnight stay.
This section of the Parang La trekking would be there in your heart forever due to the presence of extremely beautiful scenery on the way.
Tread on flat and vast plains to reach Tso Moriri – a mesmerising glacial lake at an altitude of approximately 15075 feet.
On the way, if you are lucky, you will spot some Tibetan wild asses and around the lake, hordes of migratory birds.
Upon arriving at this heavenly place, take a look around and plunge into the cold water if you dare!
Click loads of photographs and walk around the lake to explore the area more. Later, transfer the camps for an overnight stay.
Begin the wonderful part of the Parang La trek by walking along the shores of Tso Moriri.
It is a widely accepted spot to click hundreds of pictures of the snow-clad peaks of the Ladakh Mountain Range.
As you reach the Korzok Village, avail an optional visit to Korzok Monastery, which houses statues and intricate wall paintings of numerous Buddhist deities.

The best time to go for Parang La trek is during the month of mid-July to September. The weather remains very subtle during the day and gets colder at night.
Parang La is a difficult trek and you will trek to an altitude of 18,300ft which needs prior trekking experience. As you continue your trek you will come across some tricky paths.
While you are heading out for your Parang La Trek there are few essential things which you need to carry. Trek Essentials:
Trekking shoes: On your Har ki dun trek you will cover a long distance and walk for long. So you need proper trekking shoes which are comfortable and tough. Choose trekking shoes that are flexible and have good ankle support. Also, see that they are water resistant.
Backpack: You will also need a good backpack with sturdy straps and supporting frame. Also, don’t forget to take a rain cover for your backpack
Clothing:
Two trek pants: Carry at least two spare pairs in case you first pant get wet. Wear one pair and carry the other pair with you.
Three warm layers: During this trek, you will be trekking at a high altitude so it is very important that you have proper clothes for the climatic conditions. Make sure you have three warm clothes layers to protect you from cold.
Three shirts with collar: While on the trek don’t forget to change your t-shirts.
On your Parang La trek, you will cover a long distance and walk for long. So you need proper trekking shoes which are comfortable and tough. Choose trekking shoes that are flexible and have good ankle support. Also, see that they are water resistant. Quechua Forclaz 100 High will be a good option for you.
No, drinking and smoking is not recommended during the trek. As you will be trekking to a high altitude drinking and smoking will affect you breathing conditions.
During your trek, you will experience a sunny morning every day but colder nights. Always make sure that you carry or wear thermals for your trek.
Yes, taking a Diamox at the very beginning of the trek can be really helpful. You can also avoid it if you have prior trekking experience, but if you find any symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) which includes a headache, nausea and vomiting then inform your trek leader. During your trek, each of the campsites holds first aid kit and fully equipped cylinders for such situations.
As the Parang La trek is considered as a difficult trek, you need to prepare yourself before heading out for this trek. For this, you can start jogging every day and then do cycling for some time. Always take the stairs without any breaks which will help you to keep fit.
Also, start with brisk 30 minutes walk every day and then some physical exercise like stretching. You can also do some yoga every day to regulate your breathing properly.
While on your Parang La trek, we provide toilet tents which are waterproof. There will be 2/ 4tents depending on the size of the group. The toilets tents will have a deep pit for your nature calls. You will also have a mound of soil and a shovel to cover it up which you can cover it up. This is the most hygiene way for you in the wild. Also, toilet paper is the advisable instead of wet wipes.
The Parang La trek has two specific starting points, and you can opt for any of these points according to your choice. It may be started from the Kardok village in the Leh region or the Chicham or Khibber villages in the Spiti valley. The highest elevation of the trek is 18,300ft at the Parang La and Pare Chu river.
Reaching the starting point of the Parang La trek, that is, Chicham or Khibber village in Spiti itself takes a couple of days. First, you drive to Manali from Shimla, Delhi or Chandigarh airport, and then, from Manali, you drive 202 km to Kaza. From Kaza, the Chicham village is merely an 18 km drive, and this is the place where the trek starts.
The Parang La trek is a 9-11 day trek depending on how many days of acclimatization you need, as it is quite a difficult and high elevation trek. It takes at least 12 days if you count the days you need to reach the starting point or your drop off at Leh airport.
It is definitely a difficult trek, but if you are careful and have a good fitness level, then the Parang La trek will be a unique adventure for you. The trek starts at 14000 feet itself, so you may have a few acclimatization problems and altitude sickness.
The main difficult part of the trek comes in the middle when you climb from the Thaltak Meadow to Jagtha- this part will be difficult if you are not fit and experienced. However, if you are with an experienced trekking group with good fitness, you will not face much difficulty while trekking through this route.
Yes, the trek is absolutely safe if you do it with a group of other trekkers rather than going solo. You have to climb high mountains and cross streams, so if you are not sure about your fitness or core strength, it would be better not to attempt this.
Also, if you have asthma, hypertension, heart issues, or any underlying conditions that may be triggered, you should abstain from it or let your trekking guide know beforehand.
It is advisable not to do the Parang La trek solo as it is a difficult trek in rocky and steep terrain and if you are not on the correct path, you may have a mishap. Going with a group is the best idea as a group generally has a few experienced trekkers and a trekking guide. These people know the correct routes and the easier ones.
Also, if you are not feeling well, these people can help you set up camp and stay somewhere safe, something that is not possible when on your own. Most travel companies offer several schedules, so try to pick one and go with them.
