Best Time to Visit Tso Moriri: Tso Moriri is located in the Changtang region of Jammu and Kashmir, which experiences freezing temperatures during the winter months. How to Reach From Leh

Route 1: Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang

The greatest reason the popularity of this route is owed to is its length. This is the shortest route to cover the journey between Leh and Tso Moriri. The total length of the route is somewhere between 220 km to 240 km. Since the road is in good condition, the journey can be covered in a duration of 6 to 7 hours. However, if you take too many halts for the sake of landscape photography, it may take longer than that.

After starting your journey on Manali – Leh Highway, you can take your first halt at Upshi and relish on some snacks as the next place where food is available is away in Karzok. At the bifurcation at Upshi Market, take the left turn towards Mahe. Once you reach Mahe, head towards Karzok. Before reaching Karzok, you will come across some great vantage points, apt for landscape photography. A halt at Kiagar Tso is recommended as most travelers prefer to take a halt here. Resume your journey and soon you will come across another bifurcation. Do not take the tar road, rather keep going straight because that is the way to Karzok. That is where Tso Moriri is located.

Route 2: Leh to Tso Moriri via Tso Kar and More Plains

If you opt for this route to reach Tso Moriri from Leh, you will have to cover some extra miles. The total distance of the route is approximately 260 km. The journey normally takes somewhere between 7 to 8 hours. But again, the duration of the journey depends upon how many halts you take and how long they are. Moreover, there is a probability that the condition of the road will be worse too.

However, the route is quite scenic with open landscapes and views of mighty Himalayan peaks covered in snow, so you will not regret taking this route. This route also lets you see Tso Kar. The initial part of the route is the same as the Route 1 mentioned above. From there, you do not have to take the turn that leads to Chumathang, rather head towards Rumtse on Manali – Leh highway. After you leave Rumtse behind, the ascent to Tanglang La starts. Then you will proceed towards Debring. You can take a short halt here to rest and to click some photographs, however, there is not much for a shelter.

As you ride further on your road trip to Leh – Manali Highway, you will see a road diverting to left. If you are hungry or in a need for some refreshment, there are a few options in the form of roadside dhabas here. Exit the Leh – Manali Highway here by taking the left road. The first lake that you will come across on this route is approximately 22 km ahead of this diversion.

Route 3: Leh to Tso Moriri via Pangong Tso and Chushul

If you are looking for some serious adventure, you may take this road. The route takes you to remote regions with hardly any travellers or locals in sight. Owing to the scenic vistas one gets to witness while travelling on this route including the renowned Pangong Tso, it is considered as one of the best routes to reach the breathtakingly beautiful lake, Tso Moriri despite being the road least travelled. The round journey that starts from Leh and takes you to Tso Moriri via Pangong Tso and ends at Leh may be 650 to 700 km. The distance between Leh to Pangong Tso is almost 160 km.

There are various routes to cover this journey. The first stretch of the journey will take you to Pangong Tso from Leh. After Pangong Tso, you are supposed to head towards Chushul, which is a small village located on the border area. The distance between Spangmik to Chushul is almost 50 km, and since there is no metalled road, you will have to ride on a dirt track. You will have to produce your permits at Merak en route Chushul.

Proceed towards Mahe located at a distance of 77 km from Chushul. You can take a halt here and then ride towards Karzok covering Sumdo and Namashang La en route. The distance between Mahe and Karzok is approximately 63 km.

A few things are to be kept in mind before taking the trip. Firstly, the route is only open for Indians. So, if you are a foreign national, you cannot take this journey without a Protected Area Permit. Secondly, there are no fuel stations for long distances, so make sure you have plenty of spare fuel with you before you embark on the journey.

Chortens have a special space inside the complex. The wall paintings seen inside are dating back to the spiritual and artistic nuances found in Buddhism and Hindu Kingdoms. Royal Leh Palace

A nine storey high building displays the influence of Potala Palace in Lhasa is the famed Royal Leh Palace that stands with its head high on a cliff top overlooking the ravishing Leh town. Leh Palace is a must visit during anyone’s tour of Ladakh region as it has been standing there as a symbol of the old glorious days of the royal family lived here. The top floors accommodated the members of the regal community and the low floors were occupied by stables and stores.HistoryIn the 17th century, King Sengge Namgyal led the construction of Leh Palace and it gained fame in a short span of time. Later, it was termed as an architectural icon and the symbol of pride and glory of Leh. The history says that during the time when Dogra forces took control of Ladakh, Leh Palace was abandoned and the members of the family were asked to move to Stok Palace. The Archeological Survey of India has restored the valuable ruins of the palace and opened to the public as a remarkable tourist attraction.Structure of the palaceThere is a monastery behind the palace which is a part of the palace and there you will find the statue of a seating Buddha in there in the monastery behind the palace. Hemis National Park

Around 4400 sq.km is the area the prime attraction of Ladakh spreads into. We are talking about the renowned Hemis National Park named after the popular monastery in the region that is Hemis Monastery. The very rare species of wildlife is the reason behind its global recognition. Bharal and snow leopards are examples for the unseen animal collection found in Hemis National Park. The park is located on the west bank of the Indus River. The animals, the flora, the birds and the nature in the park and its vicinity are coming under the highly protected areas and this is the only place in India where the protected snow leopards are seen in abundance. The Rumbak and Markha catchments were found to be protected with the discovery of the park in 1981 and it grew into 4400 sq.km in 1990 and becomes the largest national park in South Asia. Argali or the Great Tibetan Sheep, Shapu etc are the supporters of the prey base for the predators in Hemis. Asiatic Ibex, the Tibetan Wolf, the Eurasian brown bear and red fox are some of the endangered species found before and some are still present in the park. The crucial problem faced by the park is the regular animal-human conflicts because over 1600 people are living inside the park boundaries, mainly pastoralists living with poultry farming, goats and sheep.Height: The elevation at which the park exists is 3000-6000 meters above the sea level.Location: The park is located about 5 kms from Leh and Leh Airport is the closest airport to the park.Best time to visit: To reach the park there are a number of trekking routes opened from Mid-June to Mid-October. But the best season to spot snow leopards is of course, in late winter.

Spituk Monastery

Spituk Monastery in Ladakh has another name that is Pethup Gompa, very famous among the locals. It is located at a distance of 8 km from Leh and there are 100 monks inside the gompa. The major attraction at the monastery is the giant statue of Goddess Kali. The Buddhist monastery is at a site which was blessed earlier by Arhat Nyimagung.History Spituk Monastery was founded by Od-de. He was the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. When he came to Maryul, he built the monastery and introduced the monastic community. But Lotsewa Rinchen Zangpo on his arrival said that an exemplary religious sect should be there and thus the name of the monastery was changed to Spituk which meant exemplary.Structure of the monasteryThere are three chapels in the gompa with numerous statues of Buddha and several thankas as well. The Dukhang Hall is the highlight and the two rows of seats running to a throne at the end are also something unique found here. Visitors will come across the beautiful sculptors and chortens.Location: The monastery is perched on a thrilling hill top near Indus and about 8 kms away from Leh on Srinagar road. It is at an elevation of 3307 meters.Timings: It is open on all days from 08:00 am to 01:00 pm.Entry fee: INR 20 per personHighlights: Gustor Festival held from the 27th to 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan Calendar and it is for two days with mask dance and prayers. Usually, the festival falls on winter time which guarantees the presence of natives in large but the number of tourists would be comparatively lesser.

A complete tour of Ladakh, the land with the utmost beauty was this one. Very clear surroundings, but with cracky roads and high top hills were amazing to see from the jeep. We took a stop at Khardung La Pass, which was stunning, enjoyed the view so much and then we continued. We have come across a lot of monasteries as well where we found Buddhist images and paintings. The whole trip was arranged so well so that we did not have to be worried about anything, be it the food, accommodation and transportation. The driver was excellent and it was obvious that he was doing this job for past some years, that well he knew the route. Excellent package and worth spending every single penny.

We were a group of ten people, so we had to split after meeting at Manali. Only seven people were allowed in the Tata Sumo. I am a passionate photographer as well. So the whole place looked like a haven for me, my camera was continuously clicking until its battery was drained. I don’t think, anywhere in India, you can experience the toughest roads as you face in Ladakh. An offbeat trip for many of the days.

This is the third time I went to Ladakh. Comparing to the last two trips, this was more organised, and this is the first time I was going with a group of total strangers. But due to the bad roads, climate, we were delayed in reaching many of the places. So that, they were not following the itinerary exactly. I felt it as a disadvantage. Sitting for long in the jeep made all of us exhausted and tired. At the end of the day we were out of energy. I got severe back pain also. But the passion for adventure is in me, so the next morning, I feel refreshed again. Truly, it is a typical adventurous trip. Only with guides, you will get the correct route and tension free tour.

For long my husband and I have been deciding to visit Ladakh for a sightseeing tour. So, this was a great excitement for us when we cooked this tour from Thrillophilia. We are really glad that we went on this tour. The pickup was on time and we reached Leh on time. The whole surrounding was amazing and the cold weather made it all more exciting. Our accommodation and food was the best. The rooms were very clean and so were the services. But the main fun started when we visited the monasteries and forts. Likir , Alchi Monasteries, Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, Hall of Fame museum are few of the places that we covered. Then came our drive to Valley of flowers via Khardungla, the highest motorable road in the World, which was one great experience.

Best experience ever. We had the best accommodation, food and transportation. We had an amazing guide throughout the tour and he was very informative and well versed. We were 5 people on this tour. We also visited the monasteries and also valley of flowers and Nubra valley. The best part was while we pass the highest motarable pass. We also camp for the night near the Pangong lake. Altogether it was a great experience.
